Addy liked the library. The overstuffed cushions propped her up as she contemplated what to do. The fire warmed her, she trailed her finger over the faded carpetâs pattern.
So much happening. Oh, Dane, Grit! Hang in there. Mum? Please hang in there. She silently pleaded.
I wonder if I can contact Meg?
The door opened, Addy scrambled to a sitting position.
âAddy, we need to put you on the Ether-reader. It measures the strength of your ether. We need to do some tests so that we can establish your powerâ Ferris moved into the room reaching for his pipe, âBloody new rules, been smoking me herbs for hundreds of yearsâ he muttered under his breath toying with the tobacco. His large bushy eyebrows jumped up and down in frustration.
Nerves ran through Addy. âWhat if Iâm not strong enough to assist? What if my power is useless? Nobody else should rely on me. I havenât come through once yetâ
âNatural stuff this. Nothing harmful in here. Bloody grow it me self,â he muttered as he trailed back out, distracted. Addy followed the Wizard.
They entered a translucent purple cube. Ferris waved his arm and then showed her to exit first.
The room was large and pentagonal in shape. Each tier of the room had a large symbol on the floor. The floor was smooth like marble and each symbol was dark and suspended beneath the smooth floor. The area above the symbol had a perfect circle in the ceiling â the late afternoon sky could be seen through the five holes. To the one end of the room just at the entrance of the cube was a separate symbol, the actual pentagon shape itself. A half circle shield ran up the back of the wall embracing the symbol on the floor. The most amazing thing about the room was that when you looked to the right, across the five floor symbols the room seemed to go on forever. Smooth marble floors leading from the archway to another to another and so on. The place was intriguing and also made Addy feel energized and excited.
Ferris seemed to vocalize her thoughts,
âThis place is ancient and magical Addy. We do not try to comprehend how it works or how it came to be. We only use it like The Quinary remembers.â
Glock was standing in front of the wall to the left of where they entered the hall. He was whispering and holding his palms up to the wall. Addy moved closer to Glock, she noticed the previously white wall was slowly changing colour. Almost as though the wall was blushing the pale pink crept up from the bottom and when it reached Glockâs hands the wall parted and a long cylinder swung into place soundlessly. Glock stepped aside and looked to Addy,
âCome on Addy. Step into the cylinder. You will experience a lovely sensation. It will feel like the air is hugging you gently and then your ether will be read. The strength of your ether will be indicated by the amount of sunshine that is captured on the inside rails of the cylinder.
